Peoria, Illinois, Domestic Violence LawyerI am Arthur J. Inman, a criminal defense attorney in Peoria, Illinois. I represent people charged with child or spousal abuse throughout Illinois, including the counties of Woodford, Marshall, McDonough, and Tazewell, and the cities and surrounding areas of Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, Galesburg, Rock Island, and Macomb. Domestic violence has become a staple of criminal prosecution in Illinois in recent years with the passage of several domestic violence laws. These laws encourage alleged victims to file charges, and give prosecutors tools to obtain evidence which has previously not been admissible. I am well familiar with domestic violence charges, as I was on the Criminal Justice Section of the Illinois State Bar Association at the time when the principle domestic violence statute was moving through the Illinois General Assembly. In fact, the input of the Criminal Justice Section modified the domestic violence statute in several important respects. As a result, I am well-versed in the language of the statute, and since that time, I have advised and defended many people charged with domestic violence. I am also careful to advise all of my clients of the negative effects that a domestic violence charge can have upon them. For example, one of these effects is the possible loss of hunting privileges, since a conviction on domestic violence charges will prevent a person from owning guns Many people charged with domestic violence may believe that they are clear of any legal problems because an alleged victim is unwilling to file charges against them. However, this is not necessarily the case, as the prosecution may pursue a domestic violence case, even if the person who filed the charge does not wish to prosecute. As with so many other situations where a person is charged with a crime, you should not attempt to negotiate or talk about the incident with the police or the person accusing you of domestic violence. You need a lawyer, and should let your lawyer do the talking for you. Having practiced criminal law for more than 35 years—including eight spent as a prosecutor—I know how prosecutors handle domestic violence cases. I have defended a large number of these cases in state court. If you are being charged with domestic violence, please contact me at the Law Office of Arthur J. Inman at 309-673-9711. I offer assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. |
